I just got back from my trip it was refreshing to be away however it feels great being back at the grind with my team.

Europe’s Highest and Best use City
To end off our trip my wife and I went to Venice which was an amazing place to see. We marveled at the architecture and engineering that went into creating one of the most iconic cities in the world.
Being in the construction and Real Estate industry, I enjoyed learning about the construction techniques and history of this unique city.
The story of Venice has to be one of the greatest examples of highest and best use their has been.
For those who don’t know, Venice history began roughly 1500 years ago when the Venetians had to flee the mainland due to approaching barbarians. They sought refuge in a local lagoon, which they decided to call home. With next to no habitable land to build their homes, they needed to find a solution to allow them to live in their new home.
They found it by driving wood piles five meters into the earth below the water of the lagoon. On top of these piles, they built platforms on which they would then construct their foundations. They had the foresight to keep all of the wood piles and wood platforms below low tide to keep them away from the air, which kept them from decomposing. The original Piles are still in use because of this foresight today.
One of the churches is estimated to have as many as one million piles used to create its foundation. The foundations found in Venice are just one of the superb feats of engineering used to build this city. I highly recommend looking into what else they had to do to make this unique city work.
Above is a work boat whose job is to install or remove piles used to anchor other vessels around Venice. These piles don’t last as long as they are exposed to the air and begin to decompose.
The Venetians had an amazing vision for their city and once built because of Venice’s strategic location and ease of transporting goods through the canals it became one of the wealthiest cities in the world. At its height, the Venetians expanded into an empire that controlled the Adriatic and Aegean seas. This empire all starting from creating value from something no one else before had.
